BEAUTIFUL BAVARIA

My husband and I spent last week vacationing in Bavaria.  Bavaria is absolutely gorgeous!  I know it's officially spring but, with all of the leftover snow and the freezing temperatures, it still felt like we were still in the middle of the winter.

While we were there, we took the opportunity to visit Schloss Neuschwanstein.  The Schloss or "castle" is located in the tiny village of Füssen in southwest Bavaria.  Schloss Neuschwanstein was built in the late 1800's by King Ludwig II.  The king built his palace as a homage to his favorite composer Richard Wagner.  Schloss Neuschwantstein was built in the Romanesque style. The rooms feature paintings depicting scenes from some of Ludwig's favorite operas by Richard Wagner, including Tristan and Isolde.  The castle had many "modern" features for the time including electricity which was provided by a battery, a heating system, and working telephones.

King Ludwig only lived a little over 100 days in the castle.  Many believed the King was insane and questioned his ability to rule.  In 1886 Ludwig was taken into custody and was to undergo a psychiatric evaluation. Shortly after his capture,  Ludwig's body was found on the shores of lake Lake Stamberg.
His death was ruled as a suicide by drowning but, many believe he was murdered in an attempt to remove him from the throne.

At the time of Ludwig's death, Schloss Neuschwanstein was still incomplete.  The reclusive King had intended for the castle to be his own personal refuge.  However, just days after his death, the castle was opened to the public for tours.  The palace has been featured in many films and, it was also Walt Disney's inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle in Disneyland.  I can easily relate to Walt Disney being inspired by this magical castle and it's surroundings.  Being there was truly like a fairytale.

Unfortunately, it is not allowed to take photographs inside of the castle.  However, we did manage to get a couple of photos of the kitchen.  It's huge!

We had a great time in Bavaria.  We're planning to visit these mountains again when the weather is warmer.  The area is ideal for a low- key, relaxed vacation.  It's perfect for activities such as wandering or hiking, and bike riding.

Look what we found...  Woolworth's in Bavaria!

Have a great day!
